Man faces prison for theft from employer

NANUET—A Rockland County jury has convicted a 31-year-old Orange County man for stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise from a Nanuet electronics store where he worked.

Jorge Delacruz faces up to four years in state prison when he is sentenced for fourth-degree grand larceny by County Court Judge William K. Nelson on Sept. 27.

He faces an enhanced prison sentence based on previous convictions.  He was convicted of fourth degree criminal sale of marijuana in February 2006, as well as fourth-degree criminal mischief March 8, the Rockland District Attorney’s Office said.

West Point to host new class of cadets

WEST POINT—Cadets-in-training from around the world will gather at the U.S. Military Academy next week for the reception for the class of 2015.  The reception is scheduled for Monday, after which they will begin their basic training.

The class consists of about 1,250 candidates, including residents of every state, 14 from around the world, 21 combat veterans and more than 340 minorities.  Seventeen percent of the class is female; there are 132 African-Americans, 121 Hispanic-Americans, 76 Asian Americans and 12 Native Americans.

Candidates were chosen based on their performance in academics, leadership and athletics, Col. Deborah McDonald, director of admissions, said in a press release.

Event to mark new firetruck

SUFFERN—The Suffern Hook & Ladder Company 1 recently expanded its fleet with a 2010 Seagrave 100-foot Tiller Ladder.

The new truck is the first of its kind to be purchased by the village of Suffern since 1973, and its arrival will be celebrated by local fire departments at a traditional “wetdown” this weekend.
